James Holmes, more commonly known as "The
Dark Knight Shooter," could possibly escape the death penalty after all.
Judge Carlos Samour Jr., who is working the case, actually accepted
Holmes' attorney's plea deal of not guilty by reason of mental insanity.
Holmes will now have to undergo an extensive mental evaluation, and if
it's proven that he is in fact insane, Holmes could be committed to a mental
hospital indefinitely. That would mean that he could actually be freed
eventually if the doctors evaluating him feel as though they've restored his
sanity over time.
It would surely be a major break from the alternative of spending his
life in prison or facing the death penalty.
