$26 investment turns into $850,000 in just four years
An offhand $26 investment in bitcoins has turned into an $850,000 windfall for one very lucky Norwegian man.
According to Norwegian news outlet NRK, Kristoffer Koch decided -- on a whim -- to invest 150 kroner (about $26) in 5,000 bitcoins in 2009, soon after the Bitcoin network first came into existence. Koch is said to have discovered the virtual currency while writing a thesis on encryption and decided to put down a small investment out of sheer curiosity.
Unaware of just how successful bitcoins would soon become, Koch says he promptly forgot about his digital stash; that is, until a flurry of media coverage about bitcoins caught his attention earlier this year.
Koch reportedly had to scour his memory for the password to the encrypted wallet that held his investment. When he finally figured it out in April, he says he was stunned by what he found.
"It said I had 5,000 bitcoins in there. Measuring that in today's rates it's about five million kroner," Koch told NRK, according to a Guardian translation.
That's about $850,000.
Gizmodo points out that Koch's small initial investment is worth even more today. With a single bitcoin currently priced around $210, Koch's investment would be worth more than $1 million.
Koch isn't the only person who has benefitted from the rise in bitcoins' worth and popularity. According to an April report by Bloomberg Businessweek, the success of the world's first decentralized, peer-to-peer digital currency has spawned many overnight millionaires.
“I’m happy to be considered a member of the Bitcoin millionaires’ club," 30-year-old Jered Kenna told the news outlet. Kenna reportedly bought his first batch of bitcoins -- 5,000 of them -- at 20 cents each.
"Make no mistake, this is no different than any other high-tech stock. It's risky, it's volatile, and you should not invest any more than you are prepared to forfeit all together," an anonymous Bitcoin miner told a blogger for The Huffington Post in May.

Arrest Warrant Issued for Stevie J. Over Unpaid Child Support
Stevie J is apparently up to his eyeballs in child support debt, with documents obtained by AllHipHop and MediaTakeOut showing he allegedly owes $1.2 million in back pay to two of his children with his former girlfriend. The situation is so serious that the State of New York has reportedly issued a warrant for the "Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta" star's arrest.
Representatives for former music executive Carol Bennett (Stevie's ex) confirmed that Stevie J's assets are being targeted to repay the debt.
Bennett will reportedly hold a press conference later this week to address the matter.
AllHipHop reports that Ms. Bennett, who helped Stevie with his music career while he was a producer at Bad Boy Records, went so far as to contact Bounty Alert and the Custodial Support Foundation, organizations that specialize in recovering hidden assets from people who deliberately neglect their child support duties.
“Our preliminary investigative efforts in Ms. Bennett’s case and have uncovered information which raises huge concerns,” Tiffany Stewart Esq., President of the Custodial Support Foundation, told AllHipHop.com in a statement.
Under the 1992 Child Support Recovery Act, it's a crime to leave a state while owing more than $10,000 in unpaid child support, for more than two years.
According to Ms. Bennett, Stevie J. could be facing jail time since he owed more than 20 times that amount when he left New York for Georgia.
Ms. Bennett's press conference is slated for October 31 at 11:30 a.m. ET in NYC.

MJ's Former Doctor Conrad Murray a Free Man Once Again
Dr. Conrad Murray, the physician put behind bars for killing Michael Jackson, is a free man after serving just two years.
The L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. reports that Murray was released at 12:01 a.m. Monday, sneaking out a back way to avoid paparazzi.
Murray has been locked up since November 2011, after being convicted of manslaughter. He was sentenced to four years behind bars, but only served two, which is pretty standard for a four-year sentence.
TMZ reports that Murray plans to try to get his medical license back in Nevada and block revocation in California, but sources tell the gossip site he doesn't stand a chance.
He's also looking to hire a publicist once he's out to help him score interviews and get his tell-all memoir published, which he wrote a good chunk of while locked up.

Exec Lyor Cohen Funds Revolutionary New Music Venture w/ Google
Music executive Lyor Cohen is attempting to move with the times. Cohen is reportedly creating a music company which will be related to a major label, but will have independent label appeal.
The former Warner Music Group chief executive teamed up with Google for this new project, which will be associated with Atlantic Records. Apparently, the company will have all the distributing and marketing advantages of a major label, but will function as a more lenient independent label.
The move is smart, considering the changing twentieth-century music environment. Cohen has led white a bit in the music industry, becoming the first major label to license content to YouTube, and allowed YouTube to show Warner Music artists in exchange for advertising.
